Sad news of James Mulvey in Boston
With much sadness I want to share with all the Mulvey and Farrell families that my father James A. Mulvey passed away on September 2, 2009 at the age of 96. He was a true Mulvey/Farrell and will be deeply missed.

Powerpoint location and Snapfish photos
I have removed the Family History Powerpoint from the top of the Blog because it was taking too long to load on some of the older computers. It is available anytime however, at slideshare.net - just enter " Mulvey Farrell Reunion2 " in the search box, and it will come up.
I have also provided a link to all my pictures taken at the reunion through Snapfish - just look on the sidebar of this Blog and you will see three separate files of pictures. You can order prints of as many or as few of these pictures as you like directly from Snapfish. I am working on labeling them all - if I have made mistakes or left names out - please let me know and I'll fill them in.
I will also soon provide a Snapfish link to the old family photos that we have gathered so you can make prints of them too.
Hope you are enjoying these last days of summer.

About the PowerPoint
Some of you have older computers and the PowerPoint I posted above may take a long time to load. Is it interfering with your ability to see the rest of the blog? I can take it off, or try putting it in the blog messages section to see if that helps.
Patrick or Michael - take a vote
Kevin Mulvey from CA sent this lovely picture, and they’re not sure who it is but they think it’s their grandfather’s (Patrick) older brother, Michael.
Compare these pictures and tell us what you think. On the right are young Michael and older Michael, on the left is a picture of young Patrick. I think it really looks like Patrick - I think Michael got a little chubbier with age, judging by this and some other pictures we have.

Wow! What a Great Mulvey/Farrell Family Reunion
The family reunion was a great success. We had 15 family members participate in the Friday golf scramble. The winners were Nelson Wixson (son-in-law of Joe Mulvey), Chip Mulvey (son of Frank - deceased), Shannon Mulvey (son of Thomas J.), and Thomas Mulvey (son of James Sr.). We had around 85 relatives at the Friday evening reception. Everyone seemed to have a good time and most didn't leave until the well went dry. Renewing old acquintances and meeting new family members was exciting. Although I hadn't seen many of my relatives in over 35 years, it only seemd like yesterday, once we got to talking about old times. Everyone was given a family reunion t-shirt. The full day session on Saturday was great. We enjoyed a power point presentation by Eileen Falcone on the family history, with a good amount of input from the audience. Ann, Bernadette, Liz and Mary were in fine form and sang (on many occasions over the weekend) our theme song "Lovely Leitrim". We couldn't get enough of their sweet voices and I can still hear the song in my head. In addition, they provided a wonderful and informative panel discussion on growing up in Ballinwing. Bill Doutney proved to be a wealth of information on the Farrell's and James "The Great" Mulvey's visits to America and his and Bridie's visits to some local breeding farms. Mary Ann (Mulvey) & Jim Merrill's son Jim Jr. used the occasion to get married in Raleigh on Friday. He and his new bride Loi were introduced and shared a cake with the family. My late brother Frank and Julia's son Rickey announced that his daughter Kristen and boyfriend Berto were just engaged. Everyone present on Saturday received a Mulvey/Farrell Family Reunion Certificate of Attendance. We had 95 people for lunch and 101 people for dinner. On Sunday we had 60 people stay around for the cook-out at Joe & Marianne's house. We are talking about doing a family reunion in Leitrim in 2011. We have passed the flag to organize this to our beautify Irish Cousins. More on this in future postings. Words can not capture the joy, love, and family spirit present at the reunion. I know that Marianne and I enjoyed meeting with our lovely family. Whatever work went into organizing the reunion was worth every minute. God Bless All! Joe

Greetings from Bernadette Farrell in San Francisco
Photo of my father John James Farrell (left) and his brother Willie Joe Farrell - sons of James and Mollie Farrell, Ballinwing. Taken in Leitrim Village 2006 at the celebration of Willie Joe and Mae's 40th wedding anniversary, sadly Dad died suddenly of a heart attack a few months after this photo was taken.
My Father, John James Farrell, his niece Maria Farrell(left)(Willie-Joe's daughter) and myself Bernadette.
Dad grow up on the neighbouring farm to Mulvey's in Ballinwing with his brother Willie Joe, sister Bridie, parents James Farrell and Mary Doherty. Like so many of his generation he emigrated to England in the 1950's, but hardly a year went by that he did not go back "home" to Ballinwing to visit his family.
In Birmingham, England he met and married Ann Lynch and had six children.
My mother, all of my siblings, nieces and nephews still reside in Birmingham. I moved to San Francisco in 1990 and while I retain my European citizenship I became an American in 2000.
I have only recently discovered the blog and the link to the family tree and have so enjoyed exploring the connections with all of my cousins I here in the US
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the reunion, but I wish you all a successful and happy event and I will look forward to seeing pictures on the blog.
Regards Bernadette Farrell

Attendence At Family Reunion
When Eileen and myself first planned to host a Mulvey/Farrell Family Reunion we thought we might get somewhere between 40 and 50 attendees. As the word spread and the Interest Survey's were returned, we jumped to around 60/70 anticipated attendees. Now, with a last minute surge in confirmations and probable attendees, we will be close to 90 people in attendance. This has resulted in some creative modifications in handling the logistics and social activities. We are up to the task and look forward to the challenge. The meeting room may be more cramped than desired, but please bear with us. A breakdown of attendees is as follows:

Greetings from Bridie Farrell McGovern in Ireland, daughter of James & Mollie Farrell from Ballinwing
My best wishes to everyone and I hope you all have a wonderful reunion. I won't be travelling but I am sure I will be seeing some of you in the near future. In 1957 along with Aunt Bridie and James Mulvey I spent 8 months in New York. I stayed with the Doutney Family in Bay Ridge Ave, Brooklyn next door to the Mulvey (John) family. At that time I had the privilge of spending time with my 4 Aunts, Mary, Jane, Bridie and Tess. I have some wonderful memories of those 8 months. My father (James) and his brothers Willie and John never emigrated. I was married to Pat who passed away in 1997. I have 5 sons and 2 daughters. My 2 daughters and 3 sons live here in Ireland while my other 2 sons live in the States. I have 16 grandchildren which consists of 3 girls and 13 boys. My oldest grandchild Nicole who is 22 now lives in Australlia. My brother John James passed away suddenly in 2007. He emigrated to Birmingham, England in the late 1950's where he married Ann and they had 3 daughters and 3 sons. Ann and family still reside in Birmingham.

Bill Mulvey Home From The Hospital
Bill Mulvey, husband of Pat, and brother of Robert Sr. and James, suffered a heart attack just before Easter. After playing golf on Thursday he suffered a sharp pain in the back. Over the next several days and various medical examinations he was transportated from his doctors office to the hospital. He had a double bypass. Bill is now at home recuperating. Although still weak he has been up and about for short periods of time. Pat said that he is a little bit grumpy so he must truly be on the mend. Bill is the son of John Mulvey and Mae Jacoby. Grandson of Frank Mulvey & Jane Farrell. Please keep Bill and Pat in your prayers. They will be at the family reunion and plan on playing in the scramble golf tournament.

Myself and Aiden now live next door to the original homestead with our baby son Tola. I have seen the photo on your blog (black & white) of my Great Grandfather John and my Great Aunt Bridie and Tess and my Great Uncle Thomas, John & Willie. Letter from Patrick Mulvey, San Diego
The first picture is my grandfather and grandmother's wedding photo circa 1910: Patrick Mulvey - Margaret Costello
The second picture is my Mother and the four of us kids about 9 years ago just before Jim’s illness: Jimmy is on the left, Cathy, Mom, Pat, Kevin.
The third picture is my father James and our aunts and uncles - his siblings and spouses (circa 1988 or so)…….. Left to right: James B. Hackett (born in Galway), Catherine E. Mulvey (mother), James/Buddy (father) Mulvey, Margaret Hackett nee Mulvey(Peggy), Billie Mulvey nee Howley, Lawrence Mulvey (Larry). All are disceased except for Billie, my Uncle Larry’s wife.
Hi Joe and Marianne:
My father and mother visited the Leitrim farm and relatives in the summer of 1966. My grandfather, Patrick, died a few years before I was born in 1949. My Dad and my Mother always had very fond memories of their trip to Ireland till they day they died. When I was a little kid, I met my grandfather’s brother James in the early sixties. I was in Dublin on business in November but did not have time to get to Carrick on Shannon.
A little about me. I am 59 y/o with six children, one grandchild, US Navy Vietnam era veteran and live in San Diego. My parents moved here in the late 70’s. My brother Kevin went to high school in Coronado, where they lived for 30 years….he still lives there. My sister, Cathy, husband was here in the Navy at the time so after my Dad’s heart attack and subsequent forced retirement they moved out to be close to her and the young baby. I moved in the early 90’s, primarily to help with my parents who were getting elderlyl at the time as well as to escape the corporate life. Kevin and I started a music business which Kevin runs today with three stores in Southern California. My brother James, US Navy Veteran, two years younger than me, died in 2001 of lung cancer at 49. We are still dealing with that loss…………….
Currently, I am running a tidal energy renewable energy company in Scotland so I have been traveling quite a bit back and forth between the UK and SD. We expect to relocate during the summer. Hopefully, we will be able to make the reunion if all goes well.
Here is a little summary of Catherine (1924-2007) and James/Buddy (1917-1996) family:
Catherine (Stansfield) (1955): Daniel (33)
James (Carol Adler)(1952-2001): James (28); Brian (25); Laura (23)
Kevin (Kathryn Keyes)(1962): Mary (14); Sean (12); Michael (10); Shannon (6)
Patrick(1949): Patrick (30); Erin (25); Maureen (21); Kathleen (2); Grace (2); Liam (5mos); one grandchild Gabriella (3) – Patrick Jr. Father
Cathy is retired from SANDAG and lives in Julian in the mountains outside SD.
(Note for Patrick): 2 marriages since one woman could not have endured that marathon!) Married to Brandi nee Harris since 2003.
BTW, I obtained my Irish citizenship last year via my grandparents. It has helped me very much and being an EU citizen allows me to work freely in Europe. We are looking forward to visit Ireland for a holiday in the next year also. My little son Liam is also a Irish citizen since I had the citizenship before he was born!
I’m looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the family at the reunion. I’ll forward any info you send me to Kevin and Cathy.
This has been an re-awakening in mid-life to find so many Mulvey relatives. My father, who was raised in NYC as we all were, mentioned many of the family names in the family tree. He mentioned your grandfather’s name to me more than a few times and he appears to have interacted with the Mulvey family in NYC when he was young before WWII. Afterwards in the next few decades, everyone scattered to the four winds including all of us except my brother Jim who moved up to Orange County. After the Navy, I went to college in upstate NYS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and worked for FEDEX and GE in various corporate positions before moving to California.
While my parents were in Ireland in 1966, Ralph Branca of the old Brooklyn Dodgers fame was visiting with his wife, the daughter of the other James Mulvey of the Dodgers and Hollywood. They has a fabulous time with many mentions of drinking and having fun with everyone. He was very proud of being a Mulvey and passed that on to us children. He always spoke very highly of his father and his brothers. My grandfather was an engineer as was my father and all three of us boys. Our grandfather, Patrick, came to the US and worked his brother Mike Mulvey, who was Chief Engineer at the first Edison power plant in NYC. He returned to Ireland with my grandmother whom he met in New York City. She was from Limerick and working as a governess for a wealthy family. They returned to Ireland, got married, and he opened a bicycle shop in Carrick on Shannon @ 1910 – he had been an apprentice blacksmith before leaving Ireland. He couldn’t make it economically and they returned to NYC with their now little daughter (Mary/May) who unfortunately died in the diphtheria epidemic in 1920. They never really wanted to leave Ireland…..my grandfather was the youngest……but those days were hard times in Ireland. My grandparents are buried in the Bronx with their little daughter.
I look forward to getting to know everyone and keep the family legacy and traditions alive into the next generations. Thanks Joe for bringing this all together. Once our generation passes, the chances of reunion would have been slim.

Update on Response to Interest Survey
To date, we have heard from 21 families for a total count of 60 people (including children). Soon we will have to start to identify hotels and a meeting facility. I have some definite ideas on a meeting facility and other logisitical arrangements, but total number of attendees is critical to the planning process. So if anyone hasn't responded but intends on coming to the reunion, we need to hear from you soon. The golf outing for Friday, August 7th, will be held at the Brier Creek Country Club. We will have a mixed five teams of 4 people each team, best ball, 18 hole scramble. This is co-ed and golfing skills are not necessarily required. The first 20 players confirming will participate in the scramble. The cost will be a modest $30.00, of which $20.00 will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Joe's granddaughter Shea, 12 years old, has type 1 juvenile diabetes. If anyone has any special needs or ideas for us to consider during the reunion, please let us know. Thanks, Joe
